01The Ashen Peaks
In northern Drakoria, sunlight touched the black-glass faces of the Ashen Peaks for only a few minutes each day. The Ancient Dragon Order built its sanctuaries there, believing the true color of flame could only be seen against dark stone. Even as the youngest guardian, Vaelor heard the power sleeping beneath the mountain before the others. Its measured pulse taught him that the Last Flame was not merely fire, but a living seal carrying the memory of dragonkind. His duty was therefore greater than guarding treasure: he had to preserve memory without carrying the failures of the past into the future.
02The Covenant of Stone
When Eryndor’s first king came north seeking a weapon for his wars, the dragons refused. They offered a covenant sealed into the mountain instead. Dragons would not strike human cities, and humans would never enter the passages of the Last Flame. Vaelor set the stone tablets into the sanctuary gate with his own claws. The peaks remained silent while the kingdom’s towers rose, yet ambition beneath the palace began collecting maps of forbidden roads. Each time Vaelor returned from the sky, he found new tracks on the mountain paths and recognized the scent of approaching betrayal between sulfur and iron.
03The War of the Hollow Crown
When the heir vanished, Eryndor’s noble houses turned on one another. The War of the Hollow Crown consumed frontier keeps in weeks and the capital gates in months. A royal messenger brought Vaelor a gold-sealed order to defend the walls. Vaelor listened, then burned the decree in the Last Flame. He understood that the war was not truly fought for the crown, but for the power below the peaks. He summoned the remaining guardians and received only silence. The sanctuaries had already fallen and the covenant tablets had been broken from within. That night he carried the flame beneath his armor into the deepest chamber of the mountain.
04The Silent Century
After Eryndor fell, the northern sky did not see Vaelor’s wings again. He remained motionless on his stone throne so his enemies would believe the Last Flame extinguished, matching his breath to the mountain wind and his heartbeat to the veins below. For a hundred years he listened to collapsing bridges, abandoned villages and people forgetting his name. Time dulled his obsidian scales and darkened the ceremonial gold of his armor, but waiting was never surrender. In the dark, Vaelor reordered the past and searched for the one sound that might prove the architect of the Order’s fall was still alive.
05The Guardian Returns
When the first seal broke, villagers below mistook it for an earthquake. The second crack sent red light through the mountain. On the third night Vaelor opened his eyes and rose. He still kept his wings partly folded, sensing that an old shadow had awakened in the sky. The Last Flame could no longer be protected through concealment. It had to be carried to Drakoria’s scattered people, and the broken covenant rebuilt under new terms. As Vaelor descended, he left no burning army behind, only a single mark: a golden claw print across black stone, pointing toward the future.
