The Gate Cohort

Ragna came from the gate cohort that protected evacuations of stone, supplies and people. She earned rank by holding the same winter watch for three years. Her poleaxe was chosen not for duels but to break ladders, lift gate beams and preserve distance in narrow passages.

The Third Breach

When the western wall broke for the third time, commanders ordered her to hold it to the death. Ragna refused and withdrew the wounded and engineers. The outer wall collapsed an hour later. She lost her rank for disobedience, but the engineers she saved built the fourth line.

Five Lines

As the capital fell, Ragna turned retreat into a sequence rather than a rout. Soldiers escaped at the first line, civilians at the second, archives at the third and water carts at the fourth. The fifth line was not a gate but a narrow stone causeway over the river.

The Ashen Vanguard

Survivors named her the Ashen Vanguard because she was first to appear beyond each ruin. Shield cuts record lost lines; red bindings on the axe record units that escaped them. When she met Ser Caldris, both realized they had saved the same people through different gates.

The Sixth Line

Ragna marks defenses along the narrowing road to the Ashen Peaks. Behind her is not a city but a scattered company moving toward the Last Flame. If the sixth line falls, there will be no road for a seventh. Her plan is not simply to fight, but to make everyone stand as one line at the right moment.
